2/11/2008 11:02:58 Play online chess | Subject: Unrated Consultation Match
Message: Inspired by similar matches here in the forums, I am seeking players for a consultation match (unrated of course). I need a partner and two opponents. Old friends get preference, and I would prefer players rated 1600+. This is strictly a learning exercise, as I expect honest, shared human analysis. Sign in here if you are interested.........

thanks ——— Chess: The Year in Review — Chess again crossed paths with politics in 2011, with the most remarkable moment occurring in Tripoli, Libya, during the NATO bombing campaign against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the World Chess Federation president, flew to Libya in June and played Qaddafi. Ilyumzhinov had known the Libyan leader since at least 2004, and there was speculation that he was on a mission to try to end the war. The game ended in a draw, but the war continued. (Tripoli fell to the rebels two months later, and Qaddafi was killed in October.) Politics also shadowed an achievement by Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, an Iranian chess grandmaster who set a record in February by playing 614 people at ...

tag1153 ——— Marc Lang catches the eye by breaking world blindfold record — When Miguel Najdorf played 45 chess games simultaneously blindfold in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1947 the exhibition took over 23 hours, including an interval for Najdorf to change his perspiration-soaked shirt and rest his eyes. Later the Hungarian Janos Flesch played 52 games without sight of the board, but his claim unravelled because many opponents resigned after a few moves, and it seemed that Najdorf's performance would never be approached. But last month a little-known 41-year-old 2300-rated German chess master, Marc Lang, toppled the record with 46 games in 21 hours. In previous years Lang set a German record, then broke George Koltanowski's historic European mark of 34 games played at ...

i'm not sure how much i'd be able to teach a player like marin, for example, but i'll do my best. ——— The World Chess Hall of Fame — The World Chess Hall of Fame celebrated the 10th anniversary this month in a new location in St. Louis, Missouri. The history of the Hall and portraits of inducted chess players are available on the impressive web site. When it first opened in Miami in December 2001, I was inducted there together with five great chess players: the unofficial world chess champion Paul Morphy (1837-1884) and the official ones such as William Steinitz (1836-1900), Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941), José Raúl Capablanca (1888-1942) and Robert James Fischer (1943-2008). I shared the same birth city, Prague, with Steinitz and as fate would have it, we both ended up in America. "The decision of Lubomir Kavalek not to return home from a foreign chess ...

tag1153 ——— 2011 Year in Review — And what a year it has been! 2011 started with St. Louis’ own Hikaru Nakamura winning the 2011 Tata Steel chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Holland, against the world’s best chess players. It was the biggest tournament victory for an American since Bobby Fischer, and his performance catapulted him to No. 7 in the world chess rankings. Although he has experienced some ups and downs this year, Hikaru is currently holding onto the No. 10 spot in the world and is looking forward to an exciting 2012. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who turned 21 in December, proved he is worthy of his top spot as he turned in solid performance after solid performance all year. He is steadily climbing toward Gary Kasparov’s peak rating of 2851 and ...

PS: A long time control is usually necessary :P
——— Shooting the chess rapids for the holiday season — The holidays are traditionally a season of hustle and bustle, so what better time is there for holding a major rapid chess championship? Georgian GM Baadur Jobava emerged as the new European rapid chess champion, topping a high-powered field this month with a 9-2 score in Warsaw. Once something of a curiosity, the rapid Game/25 format is now firmly ensconced in international play, with the faster time control often leading to more combative and aggressive play while allowing an entire continent to hold an 11-round championship tournament over the course of a long three-day weekend. While not as chaotic (and random) as faster blitz chess play can be, rapid is clearly a different animal than chess played at ...

Message: ......thanks for your patience. You're in (and again, no hard feelings:) The teams will be Ion and Steve (white) vs. Marin and Tag (black). This will be a good teaching and learning experience for all of us. Ion - please challenge Marin to an unrated game with a 14 day control. Steve, you do the same with me (we are essentially going to play the same game on two boards, and this way we will each have easier access to the analyze the board feature.) Gentlemen, start your engines:)

Message: It is kind of complicated to have 2 boards IMHO, you can use "analyze the board" on games in other profiles without difficulty (I do it all the time).
Ion and myself started the game, I propose that this is the only active board and we will communicate through messages before we play the moves :)

Message: Which we did not have starting out, but you guys will: The way that now it shows the TIME situation when looking at someone elses game. When we started, I would never know how much time we had to move. (Unless we discussed it specifically, which is kind of cumbersome.). And I'm slow anyway~!
That is the main detriment that I found with the concept, is the difficulty conveying ideas using print. Mine would want to be 3 pages long...but. So, I wanted one of those programs that you speak and it types!!
(I do have one now, that reads out loud for me. But have not tried to read a chess game notation yet!?! Should be very interesting. Maybe I'll do that soon)

Message: I do not know if it is premium only. But it is a bit hard to find if you don't know it is there.
Look at any active game. Right after DATE STARTED.... it then show the Time Control being in use for that game. But right after that is a little "?" Question Mark. And if you put your cursor on THAT, it shows the actual time each player has left~!
I only found it about a week or two ago. So have no idea if it has been there ever since the "?" marks arrived on GK?
I am going to start testing out some of them tho ... since that is certainly a useful one!

2/13/2008 10:22:03 Play online chess | PS// UPDATE re "?" & TIME SHOWING ...
Message: I thought I was going crazy here for a moment. Since I just went and looked for more of the "?" games showing time and could not find any. I have only seen it in my consult with far1ey , which is the game board of yanm vs far1ley . That is
game
so you can see what I mean.
As mentioned, I cannot say if it is only for Premium Members. But I do see games between two "Premiums" and it is not THERE either. What I suspect is that it is ONLY in use for games that use a "Fischer Time Control" off Total Time + Days Added per Move.
Since that is what the above game is using.
Can anyone confirm that? Aor if Premium makes any difference?
